The Margarita Effect

Few years ago I use to own a Lounge Cocktail bar here in switzerland, oh yes i love cocktails and jazz music! It came back to my mind few month ago something that I used to refer to as “the margarita effect”.

Its a pretty simple observable things:
at the cocktail-bar, when the standing people are waiting to order, their choice is often influenced by the people that have ordered before them,  in other words people tend to drink what others around are drinking.

For example when few guys were drinking margaritas then more clients were asking for a margarita too. Was really amazing to see how easy it was to influence the clients by settings somekind of drinking trend at the bar.

This is offten in my mind when working on designing and architecturing online landing pages and especially  when working on the ohanah homepage design. By having few events showcased randomly there I’m intrigued if the same  “margarita effect” applies, influencing the creation of other similar events. By having no control over a truely random algorithm I’m not sure if this will be a benefits or not. Assuming the margarita effect kicks in, then more simlar kind of event will be created on the site following the trend, maybe misleading the perception of first time users then ohanah is not just about those type of events.
